Common questions

What It Costs to Get It Sorted

What does "$50 off your first service" cover?

It's $50 off the first job we do for you, taken straight off the invoice once the work's finished. There's no minimum spend and it applies to any first booking, residential or small strata.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

No call-out fee for a quote. We assess what's needed, put a price on it in writing, and you decide before anyone picks up a tool.

Do prices change once you start?

Not once you've accepted the quote. If something unexpected turns up mid-job, say a hidden fault once we've opened things up, we down tools, run you through what we've found, and agree any extra cost before continuing.

How do I pay?

However suits you, card or bank transfer, once you've signed off on the finished job. The invoice matches the written quote to the dollar, nothing extra tacked on.

Common questions

Licensed, Insured and Done Properly

What is a safety switch (RCD) and do I need one?

A safety switch (RCD) watches for current leaking to earth and cuts the circuit in well under a second, before a fault has a chance to become a shock hazard. NSW building rules require one on power and lighting circuits, and we retrofit them onto older switchboards that were never fitted with one.

What brands do you install?

Clipsal and Hager for switchgear, SAL and Beacon Lighting on the fittings side, standard on every job we do. It's the difference between gear that's still working properly in ten years and gear that isn't.

Can I do my own electrical work in NSW?

No, not beyond very basic jobs like changing a light globe. In NSW, electrical work has to be done, or directly supervised, by a licensed electrician, and DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW.

What is AS/NZS 3000?

It's the Australian and New Zealand standard covering how wiring, circuit protection and switchboards need to be built and labelled, and it applies to every electrician in the country. We test each job against it and issue a Certificate of Compliance on notifiable work.

Common questions

When We Can Come

How do I book?

Call (02) 9054 3079 or drop us a message with the details, and we'll get a time sorted. Day-before reminder texts mean you're not left guessing when we're due.

What counts as an electrical emergency?

Sparks from a power point, a burnt-plastic smell, bare wires you can see, or the power dropping out for no clear reason all mean call straight away rather than wait for a normal slot. If the whole street is dark, that points to the network rather than anything inside your own switchboard.

What happens after I call?

A real person answers the phone, not a call centre, and books you in for a time that suits. Anything urgent gets a phone triage with a licensed electrician before anyone gets in the van.

Common questions

Local to Crows Nest

Why do Crows Nest's older homes need switchboard upgrades?

A lot of the pre-war terraces and mid-century walk-ups here still run boards from well before RCD safety switches were compulsory. Bringing one up to current standard almost always means a full switchboard upgrade, with a safety switch on every circuit.

Do you know Crows Nest's housing stock?

Yes, it's mostly Victorian and Federation terraces and semis from the railway-era boom, walk-up flats from the 1960s to 1980s, and new towers around the Metro station. Each period brings its own quirks, and we've opened enough of all three to know what's likely behind the switchboard before we start.

How local are you, really?

We're in Crows Nest and the suburbs around it every week, not just when something breaks. A Cammeray semi's board and a St Leonards high-rise switchboard are both familiar territory long before we knock on your door.

Do you work on heritage/strata properties?

Both, regularly. Crows Nest is thick with heritage terraces and semis alongside newer strata towers, so we're as used to heritage-sensitive wiring runs as we are to shared switchboards and common-property compliance.
